In The United Methodist Church (UMC), a Couples Committee (often known as the Married Couples Ministry or Marriage Enrichment Team) focuses on strengthening marriages, supporting families, and fostering Christian fellowship among couples within the congregation.

    Core Functions

    Marriage Enrichment:

Organizing retreats, workshops, and study groups designed to help couples deepen their emotional and spiritual bonds

    Premarital Support:

Facilitating or coordinating premarital counseling and mentorship for engaged couples preparing to take their vows in the church.

    Fellowship & Community:

Hosting social gatherings (such as supper clubs, date nights, and family picnics) to build a strong network of support among peers.

    Crisis Support:

Providing safe, confidential spaces or connecting couples with pastoral counseling during times of conflict or hardship.

    Christian Mentorship:

Pairing experienced, older married couples with newlyweds or young parents to offer guidance and wisdom.

While larger UMC congregations may have a formally elected Couples Committee, smaller churches typically operate this under the broader umbrella of the Family Ministries or Discipleship Team.

    Guiding Principles

The UMC encourages these ministries to support families and relationships in all configurations, affirming that healthy marriages are the foundation for raising faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. These programs are designed to align with the United Methodist Social Principles, which emphasize sacred covenants, mutual respect, and lifelong partnership
