Choir

The United Methodist Church (UMC) choir committee exists to support the music ministry. Its primary function is to handle the administrative, logistical, and pastoral duties of the choir so that the director and singers can focus entirely on leading the congregation in meaningful, spirit-filled worship.

Specific functions of the committee generally include:

Worship Planning & Collaboration:

Collaborating with the pastor and music director to plan choir music that aligns with the liturgical calendar, sermon themes, and church seasons.

Choir Leadership & Organization:

Assisting with the recruitment of new members, maintaining attendance records, and coordinating section leaders.

Logistics & Rehearsals:

Organizing rehearsal spaces, scheduling practice times, and ensuring that sheet music, folders, and microphones are ready for services.

Welfare & Fellowship:

Looking after the emotional and physical well-being of choir members by organizing meals during events, checking on the sick or bereaved, and planning social gatherings.

Resource Management:

Managing the choir’s inventory, which includes purchasing, fitting, and cleaning choir robes, as well as maintaining musical instruments.

Copyright Compliance:

Ensuring that the church follows all music copyright and licensing laws for printed music and live-streamed services.

In many UMC congregations, this group may function as a subcommittee under the broader Worship Committee, which is governed locally by the Charge Conference in accordance with the Book of Discipline.
