Lay Leaders

In the United Methodist Church, a Lay Leader is a vital, non-clergy leader who serves as a bridge between the pastor and the congregation. Elected by the Charge Conference, their primary function is to represent the voice of the laity and model faithful Christian discipleship in the church and the community

The official responsibilities of a Lay Leader, as outlined in the United Methodist Book of Discipline, are highly structured:

1. Partnership with the Pastor

Regular Meetings:

They meet regularly with the pastor to discuss the state of the church, its ministries, and the spiritual needs of the congregation.

Shared Vision:

They work hand-in-hand with the pastoral team to fulfill the congregation’s mission and vision

2. Representing and Advocating for Laity

Official Committee Member:

They serve automatically on key leadership bodies including the Church Council, Charge Conference, Finance Committee, Committee on Lay Leadership, and the Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)

Voice of the People:

They represent the perspectives of lay members and ensure the congregation’s concerns and ideas are heard in leadership meetings

3. Fostering Ministry and Discipleship

Everyday Ministry Advocate:

They help members recognize that their daily lives, work, and community involvement are vital forms of ministry

Community Connection:

They advise church leadership on community needs and help launch or strengthen ministries that serve those outside the church walls.

4. Training and Education

Sharing Resources:

They keep the laity informed about training and educational opportunities offered by the district and annual conference.

Personal Growth: They seek out their own leadership and spiritual development courses to better equip the church.
