    HISTORY

    Harare Central Distict

The Harare Central District (HCD) of the United Methodist Church was officially founded in 2004.

    Historical Context

The Reorganization (2004): Prior to this date, the entire capital city of Zimbabwe was managed as a single, massive administrative unit known simply as the Harare District. Because of rapid urban church growth, the Zimbabwe West Annual Conference (ZWAC) split the capital into three distinct districts: Harare Central, Harare East, and Harare West.

The Root Congregations (1964): While the administrative district was founded in 2004, the local churches that make up the district are much older. Urban congregations within its current boundaries—such as St. Philip Kambuzuma—were established as far back as 1964 to serve expanding residential areas in the capital.

The Parent Church (1897): On a national level, the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Zimbabwe dates back to December 1897, when Bishop Joseph Crane Hartzell established the first UMC mission at Old Mutare.

Motto & Themes: The district operates under the visual and biblical motto "Together We Can!" (Ecclesiastes 4:9)
