Description
The hosho is a traditional Zimbabwean rattle instrument made from a pair of dried gourds (mapudzi or maranka) filled with hota (Canna indica) seeds.
Construction
- The Gourd: Emptied and scraped out to create a sharp percussive tone. They are often boiled in salted water to harden them.
- The Seeds: Filled with hard hota seeds or dried maize kernels.
- The Seal: The opening is traditionally plugged and intricately secured with macramé-style string or woven wire.
